Way-marking makes it easy to follow the route. Paths are way-marked in red and white stripes to our own standard. On both routes there are also yellow and green signposts at the junction of the route with metalled roads (a few St Paul signposts are not yet in place).
On the St Paul Trail, volunteers from many countries did most of the way-marking. If there are differences in style it's because different teams marked different sections. The Lycian Way was partly re-marked in spring 2004 and again in autumn 2005; most is in very good condition, and now marked to the improved Israeli standard. Known problems on both routes are listed on the update pages.
The Turkish Standard
We have adopted techniques from the Israelis and the French. We now use screw-topped bottles full of paint, squeeze it onto the brush, then brush it onto the rocks – a cleaner and more efficient method. We use marks parallel with the line of the route – and visible from a distance, not on top of rocks. Bends are marked by a curved line, no-go paths with a red cross, and junctions or places of interest with a double mark. We think this is the easiest waymarking to follow. Not all of the routes are marked to this standard, but we are working on it!
Way-marking Sponsors
Garanti Bank sponsored the original way-marking for the Lycian Way and have since renewed some of the signs. Exodus, KE Expeditions and Avventur Reisen have not supported the waymarking in 2005. Ramblers Holidays gave us 695 pounds – thanks very much to them!
This is not enough to do all the necessary maintenance work. If you want to sponsor the way-marking, please contact Kate.
Volunteer groups
We do some work on the way-marking each year. Groups of volunteers accompanied by a guide work in teams of 3-4 to clear paths and re-mark the trail. If you want to join a volunteer group working on the trails, please e-mail Kate and ask to be put on the volunteer mailing list.
We ask volunteers to pay for their own food and accommodation - in 2005, we asked for a contribution of 10 Euros per day. In 2006 some sections of the St Paul Trail will need checking and re-marking.
Way-marking Report - Lycian Way - October 2004.
We were disappointed that promised money was not paid. Two teams of volunteers worked on the waymarking from 3rd -17th October, both starting in Patara. Most of the badly blocked and marked sections have been dealt with – we worked as far as Finike, including the long and difficult route from Alakilse to Finike. We were supported by our loyal driver Efe and his minibus, used for carrying tents and equipment.
We hand-cleared scrub – a long and scratchy job. Thanks to Mike Pearce, we have partly marked a new route to bypass the bulldozed road from Finike to Belen; this will be finished in a few weeks. We cleared a lovely new route from Sura to Gurses; after 2-3km down the main road, this continues left, past ruins to Myra acropolis. See the update page for this considerable improvement. We weren’t able to improve the route from Delikkemer to Kalkan, although we part cut it; don’t use this until further notice.
There are also remaining problems behind the beach at Pydnai – Letoon, but this area is still in a state of flux and we can’t do anything yet.
Way-markers were:
Steffen Ramer, Germany. Tami Harel and Moshe Bram, Israel, Monika Petersen and Erik Petersen, Denmark, Jennifer Haire and Denys Morton, UK, Mike Pearce, Finike, Terry Richarson and Kate Clow, Antalya. Many thanks to all of you.
